You probably spend more time with your coworkers then you do with anyone else. So having a good relationship and getting along with them is important. Many times the success of your job is based on how well you get along with others and not as much on job performance. Sounds crazy but this is more commonly true then you realize. So before you snap at a coworker or show anger towards someone follow these helpful tips by Karen Burns.
- Pay Attention – When someone starts to talk to you give them your full attention. Don’t just keep your head down and working away at your computer.
- Listen to them – Actively listen to what your coworkers are saying let them express themselves many times they are not telling you things to change the work environment but instead just venting or sharing their thoughts.
- Show that you care – Make sure you ask coworkers questions like how their night was or how is the family. Show concern and care about the people who work around you.
- Don’t jump to conclusions – When something is said or done that irritates you in the office by one of your coworkers don’t jump to conclusions, many times we say or do things we don’t mean so assume they have the best intentions at heart.
- Share – Don’t take all of the credit for the good and push off all the blame when things don’t go your way. Share responsibility for the good and bad.
- You can be wrong – That’s right everyone makes mistakes including you so don’t be defensive or overreact when something bad happens it is possible it was partially your fault.
- Follow through – When making commitments make sure you follow through with them.
- Be appreciative – Show sincere appreciation to your coworkers, many times appreciation will help motivate an employee more than a bonus.
- Be positive – Talk to coworkers in a positive polite manner and don’t talk down to or make it sound like you are better than everyone else.
- Be fair – There are going to be coworkers you don’t like and that is ok just remember that sugar goes a lot farther then spice.
