Secret to Gaining Job Security

by Tom Donovan on January 21, 2010

It is estimated that around 80 percent of work is done by 20 percent of the employed. Sounds unfair but the advantage of being in that 20 percent is job security.

Do you want to be in the top 20 percent of your business? Then the obvious way to achieve this goal is to work hard and have direction of what your job is. If you don’t have any direction then sit down with your boss and map out your jobs direction and learn where you fit into the company and how you are helping them succeed. Don’t just think of your job as something that you do that pays. Think about it as you providing a service to your company that they need and will continue to need.

Make sure to monitor your mistakes and successes so that you can learn from them on monthly bases. This will also help you to refocus on what you need to be doing to succeed. Set career goals, actions and build that into a time-line. You may need to adjust the time-line as you move forward but that is ok.

The best way to ensure job security is to make sure you are making your boss’s job easier. Give your boss a reason to have you around. Find out your bosses challenges and how you can help with those issues.
